‘PROGRESS SLOW'

Registration Of Vehicles

Motor registration renewals had been exceptionally slow this year, the deputy chief postmaster (Mr G. F. Bell). At the. close of business on Thursday, only 2840 vehicles had been reregistered, compared with 5820 for the corresponding period last year.

This meant that registrations would have to be made at the rate of 4750 a day to have them all completed by the deadline—June 30. Motor registration authorities expected to reregister at ie6st 94,400 vehicles, working on the number registered last year.

Mr Bell said more people were using the postal registration system, which sayed them a trip to and a possible wait at the motor registration office.

He said anyone could use the postal service which entailed collecting the appropriate forms at the motor registration office filling in and returning them with the fees to the registrar of motor vehicles. Mr Bell asked transport operators and others with fleets of 10 or more vehicles to return their bulk registrations as soon as possible. Information relating to exempt vehicles was now available. Under reecnt legisla tion all but a few previously exempt vehicles must be registered and licensed.
