CASHMERE BEATEN BY VISITING SCHOOL

After trailing by three points at half-time, John MeGlashan College (Dunedin) came back to defeat Cashmere High School, 8-6, in an annual Rugby match played in Christchurch yesterday. The visitors’ good strong tackling and more enterprising use of the ball among the backs were the decisive factors in a fast open game. Minutes from the half-time whistle, P, Harper, the Cashmere full-back, broke through a tackle, made about 20 yards with a strong run, and, with two men outside him, he passed to G Hood, who scored close to the corner.

The second half had just begun, when N. Ferguson made no mistake with a penalty from about 30 yards out after the Cashmere forwards had been caught off-side. Forwards Harassed MeGlashan began to harass the Cashmere forwards by using their superior weight to carry play deep into the Cashmere half. On several occasions Cashmere was lucky to clear its line. Cashmere often lost a territorial advantage by infringements in the scrum.

From a superb passing movement which started from halfway, MeGlashan added a further five points to its tally. Every man In the back-line handled the ball as well as some of the

forwards who had come up fast In support. It was J. Simmers who finally went over In the corner, and N. Ferguson made no mistake with the conversion.

Twelve minutes from the whistle, P. Goldsmith burst through a solid wall of the MeGlashan cover defence and reduced the home team's deficit. P. Harper narrowly missed the vital conversion from a difficult angle. Cashmere fought back, but was unable to close the gap. The teams were:— Cashmere High School.—P. Harper. S. WUks D. Blair, G.
