AINTREE HOUSES
Proposal Rejected (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) PRESTON (England). An application for permission to develop Aintree Racecourse, home of the Grand National Steeplechase, as a housing and industrial project was turned down yesterday. The Lancashire County Council’s planning and development committee turned down the application for planning consent presented by Tophams Ltd., owners of the course. Tophams have the right of appeal to the Minister of Housing and Local Government.
The county council is interested in buying the site from Tophams and developing it as a regional sports centre for the north-west of England. It has been authorised to open negotiations with Tophams to ascertain terms on which the course could be purchased. It is believed in racing circles that the county council’s plan for Aintree would enable the Grand National to continue to be run there, but if the planning permission sought by Tophams is granted it would mean the end of the great Aintree steeplechase, first run in 1837.
