R. J. SKELTON RIDES COURSE DOUBLE
(From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON. The leading jockey, R. J. Skelton, rode Kastrup and Lochfair to win the on-course double for Northern stables at Trentham yesterday.
Holders of 1749 5s tickets on this combination received £l7 7s 6d for £l.
Kastrup all but dominated betting on the first leg, the Courtenay Handicap, carrying £2580 10s of a pool of £9192 10s.
It was Kastrup’s second successive win for Messrs M. C. Conway and E. L. Jones, and he has now become one of the notable bargains of the 1965 national sales.
Kastrup won the £2OOO Great Northern Sires’ Produce Stakes at the Royal meeting at Ellerslie last week. In that race he was ridden by W. D. Skelton. STEADY RUN
R. J. Skelton, who had an earlier engagement to ride Valiant Rebel, the runner-up at Ellerslie, rode Kastrup towards the middle of the field yesterday and brought him forward with a steady run. Kastrup joined the leaders without being asked for anything extra, and he had it won a furlong out. Raidan ran on well under top weight of 8-13 for second, a length clear of the South Island filly. Her Pal, which was by no means disgraced in her attempt to complete a double for the meeting. GENEROUS ODDS
Her Pal was at generous odds for a strong form runner. Dukedom was a fair fourth, but failed to quicken in the final furlong after getting the run of the race. Delta Queen, the second favourite, tired to fifth, just beating Myree, Lochfair, a failure against hacks at Te Aroha at her previous start, outclassed the others in the Trial Plate, for which she was the 2/2 favourite. The first foal of the well
performed Balloch mare, Delloch, Lochfair (by Fair’s Fair) challenged from behind the leading line near the two furlongs, and came away in the final furlong to win by three lengths and threequarters from the former Riccarton gelding, Running Scared.
Ocean Liberty, which had contended for the lead from the start, was a good third, a head behind Running Scared and the lone South Island runner, Scorn, improved a few places in the last half-mile for fourth.
EARNED WIN Disinee was rewarded for some consistent placed performances with a win in the Khandallah Handicap in the colours of Mesdames L. W. Ford and A. W. Temm.
This win, and it was an impressive one, followed a sec-
ond at the Auckland Royal meeting and a third on the first day of the Wellington meeting last week. Disinee showed she had thrived on this busy programme with her win yesterday. B. S. Dobbs rode her well back in the field for a start but brought her forward down the outside with a run both Krazikid and Dunraven found irresistible. Krazikid took a short lead near the furlong and beat Dunraven by a neck for second. Glamis Lad came wide from well back for a close fourth, clear of Bientot. |
