“Tasman Ferry Years Away"
Even after an early decision on a transTasman roll-on ferry service, it could take up to three years to build a ship and terminal facilities, the director of trade promotion of the Industries and Commerce Department (Mr J. B. Prendergast) said on Tuesday.
Mr Prendergast said a subcommittee of the Cabinet would consider trans-Tasman sea transport. A roll-on ferry was only one of the ideas put forward.
He said a large area of land would be required at a ferry terminal and installations would be needed at both ends. The sub-committee and Government were faced with the immediate problem of urgent, quick and regular deliveries of massive small orders.
“It could well be that a roll-on ferry could be a more long-term prospect,” said Mr Prendergast. What the committee might well have to consider immediately was some system of cargo amalgamation or collection at a central point. Mr Prendergast said it hardly seemed possible to wait three years for a roll-on ferry with all the business generated by the free trade agreement and New Zealand's more active interest in exporting to Australia.
