Basketball Criticised
(N.Z. Press Association > WELLINGTON.
The president of the New Zealand Basketball Association (Mrs R. Lane) accused the annual council of the N.Z.B.A. yesterday of “woolly thinking and sensationalism” on the subject of revising the national tournament.
"1 think for too long our attitude to this question has been ‘she’ll be right’," she said.
The national tournament had been inaugurated 40 years ago, but basketball organisers then had in mind 12 teams, not the present entry of 46 teams. “Now we have not got the accommodation, the courts, the people." she said. The council was considering a remit by the Wellington association which proposed that the present tournament be divided into three —a national tournament and northern and southern zone tournaments.
The latter two would be divided into A and B sections and the national tournament would comprise the top 11 teams in the country.
The proposal, which required a two-thirds majority, was lost, 136-76, by nine votes. A remit from Rotorua suggesting that a full tournament be held annually in rotation by associations with the required facilities, also was lost.
