Four Clubs Share Table Tennis Lead
Linwood, the leader in the Canterbury senior table tennis competition, was upset by the bottom team, Wallabies Green, in the fourth round of matches last evening. Wallabies Green, which had not gained any competition points in the first three rounds, ran to a quick 6-2 lead, thanks mainly to good singles play by A. R. Spinks and R. G. Hart. Spinkst won all his singles matches while Hart, who had not won a singles match previously accounted for N. Orr and G. Makinson. Linwood’s loss, and wins by Avonside, Selwyn and Eagles, placed these four team jointly at the head of the competition. The other four teams are equal also, all having won one match. Selwyn Too Strong Selwyn proved far too good for a University side without C. W. C. Tilby. All nine singles matches were won and Selwyn lost only four sets out of 26. V. N. Brightwell lost only 66 points in his three singles matches and H. P. Holt lost 77, an indication of Selwyn’s superiority. Avonside, similarly, won all its singles matches against Celtic but here the margin was nothing like as great. Seven of the nine singles went to three sets and R. Sanderson had the mortification to win one set in each match, and still lose. Sanderson’s clash with K Ward was the best match of the evening. Both players stood up to the table and slammed a succession of drives at each other. Eagles encountered little trouble in disposing of Wallabies Red, J. Armstrong winning all his singles matches. Competition points after four rounds of matches are: Selwyn 6, Eagles 6, Linwood 6, Avonside 6, University 2, Celtic 2, Wallabies Red 2, Wallabies Green 2.
