ROWING PLANS
Target Is Olympics
The Canterbury Rowing Association last evening agreed to support the New Zealand Association’s intention to enter an eight-oar crew in the world championships at Bled, Jugoslavia, in September.
Selection trials will be held in Auckland at Queen’s Birthday week-end. A squad of nine or 10 oarsmen and a cox will be chosen. The trials will follow the pattern of those in Christchurch last year. They will include physical fitness tests, ergometer rating, rowing in trial crews, and personal interviews.
The selected crew will train in Auckland from June 12. All oarsmen will have to pass on physical and medical fitness, suitability and standard of performance prior to leaving New Zealand in mid-August. The proposed entry in the world championships is the second stage in the long-term preparation for the next Olympic Games in Mexico, in 1968.
The third and fourth stages will be a tour of America and Canada in conjunction with the Canadian Confederation Centenary Regatta in August, 1967.
This will be followed by the Australian tour and test series in New Zealand in No-vember-December, 1967. The association hopes that oarsmen in this year’s crew will be available for selection in 1967 and 1968.
