Long Trips For Dancing Lessons
There is no more dedicated dancer at this year’s competitions of the Christchurch Competitions Society than 12-year-old Evonamary Finn. Every second Friday night, she travels 149 miles by rail-car from Runanga to Christchurch to take lessons in ballet and tap dancing. She stays with an aunt and returns to Runanga on the Sunday. In previous competitions she has won more than 20 certificates, about 10 medals, and 14 cups. She said yesterday that she would like to make a career in dancing, but in the meantime was planning to go into an office as a typist when she left school. The judge of the dancing section (Miss D. Thomas) said that some of the ballet she had seen yesterday was quite delightful. “One performance was very beautiful,” she said. “In the character story dance, Beverley Clark's performance as Bambi was delightful. It was an excellent dance. “In the character dances the teachers showed a great deal of imagination. In the eight and under 10 section, Paulette Reid had a lovely balletic style. I enjoyed this section very much.” Tomorrow will be the last day of competition. On Saturday afternoon and evening, winners of the various sec-
tions will provide two shows at the Civic Theatre. Results yesterday were:— SPEECH AND DRAMA Recitation.—Eight and under 10: Donna Bartlett 1, Catherine Owens 2, Virginia Brownlee 3.
