Lodge Reports To Johnson
(N.Z.P.A. Reuter—Copyright) WASHINGTON, May 11. President Johnson yesterday had what he called a “very profitable” review of the political, military and economic situation in Vietnam.
Mr Henry Cabot Lodge, the United States Ambassador to Saigon, reported privately to the President and then briefed an enlarged meeting of the National Security Council on latest developments. Among those attending were the Secretary of State, Mr Dean Rusk, the Secretary of Defence, Mr Robert McNamara, Admiral William F. Raborn, head of the Central Intelligence Agency, General Earle Wheeler, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, VicePresident Hubert Humphrey and Mr Arthur Goldberg, Ambassador to the United Nations. Mr Lodge, who was summoned home for consultations, “brought back information that we don’t always get in a written cable,” President Johnson told reporters after the meeting. Ky Not Mentioned The President made no direct mention of South Vietnam, ese Premier Nguyen Cao Ky and his recent controversial statement about staying in office until next year. Mr Johnson said Mr Lodge had given a report in some detail and his evaluation of the situation. He said that Mr Lodge would remain in Washington for about a week and would be holding more meetings during the next few days with top Administration officials. The President said that the agenda tonight had included a full report on the military situation from General Wheeler with some supplementary details from Mr McNamara.
the South Vietnamese Government in social welfare, education and economic programmes and pledged that General William Westmoreland, the United States military commander in Vietnam, would give all possible cooperation. The President said that Mr Robert Komer, one of his special assistants, would take command of the United States role in South Vietnam’s pacification programmes and would endeavour to make the United States contribution effective.
