FARMERS’ COSTS

“Disturbing Feature”

Concern at the ever-increas-ing costs being faced by sheepfarmers was expressed by tire chairman, Mr W. N. Dunlop, in his report to the annual conference of the meat and wool section of North Canterbury Federated Farmers yesterday. “Within New Zealand the most disturbing feature is the continued and rapid rise in sheepfarmers’ costs,” he said. “Last year the rise was 2.7 per cent, and this year it is followed by a further 3 per cent

“This should not be a farmer’s problem. The meat and woo] industry currently provides two-thirds of this country’s overseas exchange (in 1964-65, £244.8m out of £372.1m). Surely during periods of exchange shortage one of the first duties of the community, through the Government, should be to prevent increases in the cost of production. No industry competing on world markets can continue to expand and at the same time absorb cost increases of this magnitude indefinitely.”
