Coral Sea Battle
Sir, —I see that au Admiral of the United States Navy and the United States Pacific Fleet Band are arriving in Christchurch to take part in ceremonials marking the Battle of the Coral Sea. I think we do not, at this day, adequately appreciate and acknowledge the vital (to New Zealand) role of the United States Fleet in the last world war. A while ago, on a car drive in the hills north of Cairns, Queensland, I looked at a plane-table which indicated, among other things, “Battle of Coral Sea
. . . 250 miles.” Do we realise that the Japanese Navy suffered its decisive defeat only 250 miles from the Australian coast? I am a loyal New Zealander but I think our national incapacity to defend ourselves indicates that we should more tolerantly appreciate that the United States once saved Australia and New Zealand from invasion and is now our only effective bulwark against aggression from the eastern world. —Yours, etc., D. S. D. May 10, 1966.
