EYREWELL FOREST
| Clearance Of Windthrow Eyr ewe 11 forest in North Canterbury is now almost clear of windthrown timber brought down by a gale two years ago. The acting conservator of forests in Canterbury (Mr B. H. Childs) said yesterday that 23.5 million cubic feet of timber had been taken from the forest since the windthrow. Only odd patches of thrown timber still lay on the ground The Forest Service is now inviting sawmillers who helped clear the windthrown area to buy standing timber. The offer will be open to nearly every sawmilling company in Canterbury. It will not include companies formed since the windthrow and which took no part in cleaning-up. Mr Childs said replanting of the windthrown areas could start possibly during next winter. Tenders had closed for final clearing and preparation of land to be taken over by the Lands and Survey Department for strip farming.
