Universities ‘Must Have More Support’

(New Zealand Press Association > HAMILTON, March 14. New Zealand universities, their students and staff were not getting the public support they deserved, said the secretary-general of the International Union of Scientific Psychology, Professor R. Russell, of Indiana, who is visiting New Zealand.

He was in Hamilton ait the week-end before flying back to Sydney, where he is visiting professor at Sydney University. “The support for universities here does not seem good enough when compared with the support other institutions receive,” he said. “Any country has to decide what fields it is going to advance itself in in respect to that country’s demands. But it seems, by the number of academicians leaving New Zealand, that New Zealand is not fulfilling its obligations in respect to higher education. “Education is too limited. Facilities must • be increased to stop the often-complained-about brain drain—and a new attitude developed towards this brain drain. “People should not throw

up their hands in horror about it but rather appreciate the ambition of these people.” There must be enough educational stimulation in New Zealand to induce them back again, he said.
