COACH TO COAST
First Was 100 Years Ago Today is the 100th anniversary of the first trip by Cobb coach over the Otira route from Christchurch to Hokitika. On the afternoon of March 15, 1866, the first coach pulled into Hokitika. The driver was William Crawley, and the sole passenger was William Sefton Moorhouse, who was several times superintendent of Canterbury. On March 20, 1866, a regu-j lar twice-weekly coach service from Christchurch to Hokitika was started. The journey was covered in 11 stages, each of about 15 miles. The coaches left from Cashel street at 2.30 a.m., and in good conditions' would arrive at their destina-i tion about 36 hours later. I
