FIRE BOARD SEATS

Waimairi Move Opposed The Christchurch City Council last evening rejected an invitation from the Waimairi County Council to discuss representation on the Christchurch Metropolitan Fire Board. The county council said that in the election of one representative of the outside local bodies it had 154 votes of a total of 283. The Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr Seath) had been asked for legislation giving Waimairi one seat and the other local bodies outside the city a seat among them. The Department of Internal Affairs had replied that it would not recommend any increase in the over-all membership, and the question resolved itself into one of reappointment of the existing local authority representation. After several city councillors had said that any adjustment could only be at the expense of the city representation. the council declined the invitation to send members to a meeting on April 1.
