Police Methods

Sir,—D. S. Mitchell is to be congratulated on taking the trouble to write in protest against the police methods he saw in Cathedral square on the evening of March 5. It does not make pleasant reading. One wonders with disquiet what kind of treatment might go on behind the scenes that the public never see. What would have happened had the man returned the tread on the constable’s foot? I was in Cathedral square about 8 o’clock that same evening and had difficulty in making my way along the footpath from the post office because of groups of noisy, jostling young people. Very soon two policemen appeared. I took particular notice of their behaviour. I did not see any “footwork,” but I was impressed by their quiet firmness and courtesy. The groups appeared to move on without any trouble and both policemen continued on their beat round the Square. Apparently the Police Force has its staff problems.—Yours, etc., JUSTICE. March 12, 1966.
