Minors In Hotels

Sir, —“20-year-old Student’s” argument concerning minors in hotels seem to be somewhat irreconcilable. While the 21-year-old age limit may indeed appear to be “primitive,” surely it is better to have 18-to-20-year-old minors drinking in hotels, while the authorities turn an understanding blind eye, than to have 15-to-17- passing themselves off as 18 and drinking in bars. If the age limit were lowered to 18, then the accessibility of public bars would become far greater to youths of 15 to 17 and the harm done could be much more serious. “20-year-old student” says that 18- are forced to swig surreptitiously in car parks and such places, and yet he follows on by saying that the very same people regularly patronise hotels, with little interference from parent or constable. Let us concern ourselves with the exigent question of our ridiculous licensing hours before we worry about upsetting the status quo concerning age limits.—Yours, etc., G. J. FORBES. May 10, 1966.
