Misunderstanding Over Freight Rates On Art
fN.Z. Press Association’ AUCKLAND, March 14. The imposiion of ad valorem rates on two overseas art exhibitions being returned to Europe appeared to have arisen from a misunderstanding, the secretary of the New Zealand European Shipping Association (Mr L. Riley) has told the director of the Auckland Art Gallery (Mr G. C. Docking). The ad valorem charges meant that up to 4 per cent of the value of cargo could be charged, irrespective of weight and size. These had not been applied to previous exhibitions. Mr Riley said it had been agreed to charge the normal rate on a shinment of German paintings to Hamburg and one of Italian sculpture to Genoa Rates for future shipments ■ft under review, he said Freight for the German ■■ paintings, which was to have
cost £BOB 3s will now cost £155, about the cost of bringing the exhibition to New Zealand. The Italian sculpture will be shipped for £250, not £1347 18s.
