ELINGAMITE WRECK
Survivor Dies At 83 "The Press" Special Service WHANGAREI. March 14. Mr Luke Lunjevich, a survivor of the wreck of the Elingamite. has died at Kaitaia aged S 3. Born in Jugoslavia, he was on his way to New Zealand at the age of 20 when the Tasman steamer struck rocks at the Three Kings Islands in dense fog on November 2, 1902. The lifeboat in which he was rowing passed a small girl floating face downward on a grating. Although others said she was dead he insisted on lifting her into the overloaded boat where she revived. Mr Lunjevich did well on the gumflelds, bought a farm and later opened a restaurant in Kaitaia. When he retired he spent much time in his orchard and commercial vineyard in Kaitaia.
