Streams Clearance Plan Inadequate’
If the Catchment Board's scheme to clear the lower reaches of the Little River streams was carried out, the council should use its powers to enforce clearance of the upper reaches, said Cr. W. S. L. Mcßae, at yesterday’s meeting of the Wairewa County Council. He said the scheme put to the ratepayers did not go far enough, as it did not deal with problems higher up the streams.
“If this scheme goes through, the council should insist on clearance higher up,” he said. The clerk (Mr W. F. Aydon) said the council had power to order clearance of stream obstructions. “But the council has not been doing its job,” said Cr. Mcßae.
The chairman (Mr W. C. Miller) said attendance at a meeting of ratepayers had been “rather poor.” It was agreed to ask the Catchment Board to prepare a rating classification, Mr Miller saying that another meeting of ratepayers would be called when it was received. War Memorial.—Water was getting into the stone work of the domain war memorial gates, said Cr. P. N. Ussher, and there was deterioration. It was decided to inspect.
Refused.—The council refused a request from the Shell Oil Company for permission to erect a 12ft by Bft hoarding on the highway at Little River. Summit Road.—“We have
no intention of doing anything, even in the distant future,” said Mr Miller, commenting on a letter from the Canterbury Pilgrims’ and Early Settlers’ Association, which suggested that the Summit road, unformed from Gebbies Pass to Hill Top, be completed.
