Prelates To Decide On Birth Control
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) VATICAN CITY, Mar 10. Pope Paul yesterday named 16 cardinals and bishops from all over the world to decide if Roman Catholic rules on birth control should be changed. They include all shades of progressive and conservative opinion, have an average age in the late fifties, and represent Europe, North and South America, Asia and Africa. This new high-level commission takes over from a study group of more than 50 experts who have put Roman
Catholic teaching on birth control under close scrutiny fbr the last two years.
On the basis of this research, the commission will decide whether to change the Roman Catholic Church’s ban on “artificial means of contraception.” They must rule, in particular, whether approval can be given to the new contraceptive pills. Roman Catholics today are allowed to use only the “safe period,” or “rhythm” method for birth regulation. The use of artificial means is regarded as a grave sin.
