W’WORTHS AUST.

Sales Rate “Satisfactory”

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copy right > MELBOURNE, March 11.

Australian sales of Woolworths, Ltd., in December, January and February showed satisfactory increases over the corresponding months of the previous financial year, the chairman (Mr T. Kelly) said today.

“It is not intended to curtail in any way the programme of development to be put into effect in the second half of this year.” he said in a statement regarding effects of the drought on the company’s sales and development.

There had been some small decline in sales in areas directly affected by drought, but these had been more than offset by sales increases in other areas of the company’s activities throughout Australia.

Mr Kelly said the company’s budgeted sales were being achieved at present. The development programme was going ahead. Three new stores were opened in February, eight were opening in March, five in April and a further 10 would be opened by the middle of the year, he added.
