‘MARYLANDS’ FETE

Handicapped Boys’ Work

Intellectually - handicapped children in the care of the Brothers of St. John of God at “Marylands" will benefit from a fete to be held in the grounds of the hostel today. Attractions will include variety stalls, cake, produce and sweet stalls, children’s clothing stalls, chocolate wheels, and lucky dips.

The fete will be held at “Marylands,” in Halls road, off Wrights road. Middleton. from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., and from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. A continuous special bus service will be run from Wrights road corner to the hostel to connect with buses leaving Cathedral square. The Brothers of St. John of God run similar institutions in many parts of the world. “Marylands” was established about 10 years ago, and was the first in New Zealand.

At present “Marylands” caters for about 70 intellec-tually-handicapped boys of ages ranging from seven to 14. They are trained in some occupation which will enable them to take their place in society. The fete today, the ninth held, will be the last at “Marylands.” Next year the institution will take over larger facilities at Mount Magdala, in Halswell road. This will enable the brothers to accommodate boys for short-term care and so enable their parents to have a rest or holiday.
