MAYDAY CALLS

Pilots Approve Simplification (N Z Press Association) AUCKLAND, March 11. The International Federation of Airline Pilots’ Associations today approved a preliminary report simplifying Mayday calls by aircraft in distress. The deputy-president of the federation (Captain J. Bartelski, of Amsterdam) said it was the first time pilots had taken part in the wording of distress messages. Mayday calls now used by pilots were based on marine radio procedure and had been criticised as unsuitable for the speed of modern aircraft, he said. The pilots’ report would be considered by the International Civil Aviation Organisation, a United Nations affiliate, in November.
