Nkrumah

Sir, —“Moderate” suggests that Nkrumah’s reign has ended. The reason appears to be that Nkrumah’s acquisitive characteristics followed those of past British governing classes. His motto was probably “Ghana for Nkrumah and pushing ahead with the Volta hydro-electrical power scheme.” Both these ideals left the working-class Ghanaians struggling in poverty and, naturally, they became impatient and hence the revolt. Surely Nkrumah could have realised that human slaves from this area built up Britain as a prosperous mercantile nation, and it would have been more propitious to have concentrated on raising the economic and social status of the common Ghanaians than glorifying his own position. It is the same in Singapore with its labour troubles; the smashing of the trade unions and murdering trade union leaders. A bonus to Tamil and Chinese slaves would be a fine solvent for Singapore’s social deficiencies.—Yours, etc., RALPH S. WHEELER. Timaru, March 8, 1966.
