Panin Outstanding In Tennis Tie

AUCKLAND.

The defeat of the top Auckland doubles pair, L. A. Gerrard and J. E. Robson, by R. N. Hawkes and O. Parun (Wellington), and the outstanding play of Parun in both singles and doubles, were the features of the first day of the Wilding Shield and Nunneley Casket matches at Auckland yesterday.

Wellington led, 5-1, in the Wilding Shield after yesterday’s play, while the Auckland women were ahead of Wellington, 4-2, in the Nunnerley Casket match.

Parun, a junior player Included in this year’s Davis Cup team, beat J. H. Lockington, the No. 3 Aucklander, 6-2, 6-1, and then teamed with Hawkes to beat Gerrard and Robson, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4. Gerrard was too good for Hawkes in their singles, while the hardest fought singles was the Robson-J. B. Souter clash. Both players were inconsistent and after much untidy play l Souter won, 12-10, 8-6.

WILDING SHIELD R. N. Hawkes lost to L. A. Gerrard, 4-6, 3-6: J. B. Souter beat J. E. Robson, 12-10, 8-6; O. Parun beat J. H. Lockington, 6-2, 6-1; R. Clarke beat E. D White. 6-2, 6-3. Parun and Hawkes beat Gerrard and Robson, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4: Souter and Clarke beat White and Lockington, 6-4, 6-3. NUNNELEY CASKET Miss M. Greenwood beat Mrs H. Robson, 6-4, 6-3; Mrs I. Vause lost to Miss C. Fleming, 2- 3-6; Miss M. Hewitt lost to Miss B. Vercoe, 0-6, 1-6; Miss M. Pryde lost to Mrs J. Bignell. 3- 4-6.

Miss Greenwood and Mrs Vause beat Miss Vercoe and Miss Fleming. 4-6, 6-4. 6-4: Miss Hewitt and Miss Pryde lost to Mrs Robson and Mrs Bignell, 2.-6, 1-6.
