16-Year-Old Set For Pentathlon Record

“The Press” Special Service

HAMILTON.

Four Canterbury girls filled the first four places after the first day of the national pentathlon championship at Seddon Park, Hamilton, yesterday.

The brilliant 16-year-old all-rounder, Miss B. Poulsen, led from Mrs L. Wilson, Miss L. Curtiss and Miss D. Charteris.

Miss Poulsen’s points total of 2692 means that if she can gain a little over 1800 points from the final two events today—the long jump and 200

metres—she would break the national record of 4501 points held by Mrs Wilson. This seems a distinct possibility as the two remaining events are ones in which Miss Poulsen is strong. Outstanding Time

In the 80 metre hurdles yesterday she sprinted to an 11.4 sec win, which was outstanding into a strong head wind, and she fallowed this with a shot put of 42ft 2in and a 4ft lOin high jump.

The high placings of the Canterbury girls have again impressed those who saw the national championships in Christchurch last week-end, and is known to be because of, mainly, the tuition of the Canterbury coach, Mr V. Breidis.

Positions after three events are: B Poulsen, 2692; L. Wil--2629; L. Curtis, 2517; D. Cjhrteris, 2502: J. Wilkins

Wellington), 2361; B. Walker (Hawke’s Bay), 2360.

Given good conditions today. R. A. Williams (Auckland) seems assured of passing 7000 points for the second time this season in the men’s decathlon championship. He finished the first day with a half-way total of 3721 points, slight’, ahead of the target of 3708 he had set himself and well ahead of a fel-low-Aucklander, P. J. Lothian, 3173 points, and A. Davies (Wellington), 3093.
