Dark Smudge Impresses In Woodville Trial

Woodville yesterday. Dark Smudge had Sail Away working hard at all stages of the trial, which will ensure that the three-year-old parades in peak fitness.

Stylish Mate and Golden Mist excelled among the younger horses. They could dispute the finish of the Wakefield Challenge Stakes.

Galloping took place on the course proper with trestles 4€ft from the rail. The central part of the straight has been heavily topdressed with soil in preparation for resowing. Beginning at the winning post, Dark Smudge and Sai? Away worked steadily to the turn to the straight where the younger horse started to puli. They were in a strong gallop passing the mile from which ♦hey ran home in Imin 50J*sec. the final six in Imin 23sec, and the Fast three in 41Fsec.

Stylish Mate was in rare form at five furlongs. He was sprinting at the finish, and continued outsade Royal Guest to take Imin ssec for the full distance, running his half-mile in 52 3-ssec and the final three in 39sec.

One of his main rivals will be his s>tablemate. Golden Mist, another to excell yesterday. She was paired with Pasta, which she shaded after five furlongs in Imin 5 2-ssec, the last halfmile in 52 3-ssec, and the final three in 38 2-ssec.

Narbada Fit [ “The Press” Special Service PALMERSTON NORTH. The Trentham candidates. Narbada and Miisere, provided the main interest in training at Awapuni yesterday. On the course proper Narbada beat Dine and Dance easily over seven furlongs in Imin 33 2-ssec, the last six in Im-in 20 2-ssec, and the last three in 41 l-ssec. Narbada was not at her best on the first day owing to seasonal trouble. She worked well yesterday and might show some improvement in the Hutt Handicap. Mi sere, which its well but may need easing of the ground, did well over half a mile in 53sec, the last three furlongs in 39 4-ssec. He is in good form for the Suburban Handicap in which he will be ridden by R. W. Taylor.
