Arrangements For Astronauts’ Visit
Arrangements have been made for as many people as possible to see the United States astronauts, Colonel Frank Borman and Captain Walter Schirra, during their brief visit to Christchurch next Monday.
The astronauts, accompanied by their wives and an entourage of 10, will arrive at Harewood from Sydney by Boeing 707 at 1.25 p.m.
They will be met at the airport by the Minister of Agriculture and Science (Mr Talboys), the United States Ambassador (Mr H. B. Powell), the Chief Commanding Officer of Operation Deep Freeze (Rear-Admiral F. E. Bakutis),
the United States Consular Agent (Mr W. G. Quirk), and the officer in charge of the Internal Affairs Department in Christchurch (Mr C. J. Kite). After a brief reception at the airport a cavalcade of cars with the astronauts will go to Christchurch by way of Memorial avenue, Fendalton road, Harper avenue, Park terrace, Rolleston avenue, Gloucester street, and Manchester street to the council chambers.
The cars will pass schools along the route of the procession at walking pace. Students of Christ’s College and Burnside High School will line the route in front of their schools. At the council chambers the astronauts will be given a public welcome. They will leave for the airport at 3 p.m. by way of Worcester street, Cathedral square, Colombo street, Papanui road, and Bealey avenue, back to Harper avenue.
They will leave by special flight for Wellington at 3.25 p.m. and arrive there at 4.30 p.m.
Next Tuesday they will address a gathering of scientists at a function arranged by the Royal Society.
