Death-Rate Of Negroes High

(N.Z.P.A. Reuter—Copyright)

WASHINGTON, March 10. Proportionately more Negroes have died in battle in Vietnam than white American soldiers, the Defence Department said yesterday.

But it denied recent allegations by some Congressmen and Civil Rights leaders that there was any discrimination in battlefield assignments. If the higher death-rate proved anything, a Department spokesman said, “it is the valour of the Negro in combat.”

If only enlisted men were counted the Negro death rate was still higher—22.l per cent.

Figures provided by the Defence Department showed that of the total United States Army force in South Vietnam at the end of last year 14.8 per cent were Negro. The Negro deathrate between 1961 and 1965 was 18.3 per cent.
