NUCLEAR POWER
McNamara On China (N.Z Press Assn. —Copyright) WASHINGTON, March 8. The Defence Secretary, Mr Robert McNamara, estimated today that China would be able to make nuclear attacks 500 to 700 miles from its borders within two or three years, United Press International reported. He said it would be about 10 years before the Chinese could launch a nuclear attack on the continental United States with ballistic missiles. Fundamentally China was moving to supply itself rapidly with expensive nuclear weapons and nuclear delivery systems at a time when her people were starving. It was this determination by Peking to channel resources into a nuclear striking capability that clearly demonstrated Communist China’s aggressive intent, Mr McNamara told the Senate House Atomic Energy Committee.
