RED CROSS PROJECTS
Plans For Year Financing the South-east Asian Disaster Relief Seminar at Singapore University between May 7 and 9 and raising funds to train New Zealanders to assist in relief programmes in any part of the world; and providing £5OOO for relief in the southern Pacific were the three main projects for the New Zealand Red Cross this year, the president of the North Canterbury branch, Mrs R. I. Brake, told the quarterly meeting yesterday. The disaster relief seminar will study pre-disaster planning, the provision of store houses of relief supplies, coordination with the Geneva headquarters of the Red Cross, and other subjects. With the funds put aside for training New Zealand relief workers, it was hoped to provide a group of specially trained people able to go from New Zealand to any disaster area as required, Mrs Brake said. After supplying help and assistance to the local community and to overseas countries in need, there was still a surplus of good quality used clothing held in the branch depot, Mrs W. D. Bunt told the meeting. Much of this was unsuitable for sending overseas. It was proposed to hold a sale at the Red Cross Centre and use the money for the purchase of dried milk, drugs, or material for making up into clothing suited for Asian countries. The meeting also heard a report of the recent leadership training course held at Lincoln College from the seven Junior Red Cross representatives from North Canterbury who attended.
