No Ban On Bikinis
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) SYDNEY, March 8. The skimpy bikinis that are almost compulsory feminine wear at Queensland’s famous holiday spot, Surfers’ Paradise, have had a reprieve. The Gold Coast City Council decided last week to take no action on a request from a local women’s organisation that it frame a by-law insisting that “adequate cover” must be worn over bikinis in the street. Aiderman R. Newman told the council that a large section of the community considered that some of the bathing costumes being worn by both women and men at Surfers’ Paradise were crude. Aiderman Marjorie St. Henry said: "Bikinis are a fashion and a fad. But I would say that for the present at least they are here to stay.” Aiderman H. M. Samuel said that wearing bikinis in the streets was part of the Surfers’ Paradise way of life.
