WOMEN’S RIGHTS
Call By U.N. Commission (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) GENEVA, Mar. 9. A call for sweeping measures in favour of women in all walks of life has been adopted by the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women. The 21-member body demanded a ban on “discrimination based on sex,” calling for equal rights in the domains of nationality, voting laws, marriage, education, employment and the civil and penal codes. The commission noted that “there remains considerable discrimination against women in many parts of the world.”
It called for its elimination, “because no country can attain its full and complete development without the maximum participation of its women.” Discrimination based on sex, the commission noted, “is fundamentally unjust, and constitutes an offence against humanity.” The resolution now goes for final approval to the United Nations Economic and Social Council, and to the General Assembly.
