Deacon Is "Player Of Year”

The 1965 New Zealand loose forward, W. G. Deacon (Waikato), has been selected “Player of the Year” for 1965 by the New Zealand Rugby League Year Book.

Deacon earns the award because “of his amazing improvement shown during his debut last year,” according to the year book. The former schoolboy Kiwi comes from a footballing family—his uncle, F. Abbott, was a 1934 Kiwi: H. Abbott, a member of the 1905 Rugby Union team that toured Britain. was his grandfather's brother. Still only 21, Deacon made his representative debut as a wing in 1961 and played for the province as a wing, centre and stand-off half before moving into the forwards in 1964. He played for The Rest of the North Island in 1964 and 1965 and scored a try in his island debut last year. He has attended three coaching schools. In Britain and France last
