Fields Will Be Fighting Fit

The American Negro boxer, Jimmy Fields, would definitely fight Brian Maunsell at Canterbury Court next Thursday evening, said the president of the Canterbury Boxing Association. Mr E. G. Pocock.

“I was talking to Clive Head, the Wellington Boxing Association matchmaker at 7 p.m.

"1 telephoned him as soon as I read the report from Wellington that Fields might have to cancel the bout because of the state of his eyebrows. "Mr Head assured me that a doctor had examined Fields and that he was cleared to fight.

“The articles for the bout between Fields and Maunsell. signed by Fields, were posted to me by the New Zealand Boxing Council this afternoon,” Mr Pocock said last evening. A Press Association message from Wellington yesterday quoted Fields as saying he might have to call off the bout with Maunsell because the covering used over his eyebrows in his fight against Manoel Santos, of Auckland, in Wellington on Monday evening, had “set like concrete."

Fields said that since the covering had been removed, his eyebrows were extremely tender and red weals and blisters had appeared on them.

“The fight is on,” Mr Pocock commented. “Mr Head told me that Dr. Ongley, who examined Fields on behalf of the boxing council and W.8.A., said Fields could box tomorrow if required.” Clay Bout Settled (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) TORONTO. Cassius Clay is due to arrive in Toronto today to sign the contract for his world championship fight on March 31 with Ernie Terrell, a fight, he says, he is far from ready for. mentally or physically. The Ontario Athletic Commission yesterday gave grudging approval to the bout which has been chased out of New York, Chicago. Pittsburgh. Montreal and a handful of other cities who object to the words and deeds of the two fighters and their friends.

Mr Leslie Rowntree, Ontario’s Labour Minister, told the provincial legislature yesterday the commission “has no other choice but to authorise the staging of the fight" because the application by the local promoter meets ail regulations.
