C. Well Placed A first innings score of 181 put Christchurch Boys’ High School in a commanding position after the first day of its annual cricket match against Waitaki Boys’ High School, which began at Oamaru yesterday. At stumps. Waitaki had lost six wickets for 44. Waitaki had Christchurch struggling at 77 for four but the later batsmen combined in useful partnerships to relieve the situation. D. PhMlipson and R. Lewis spearheaded Christchurch’s attack, Phillipson’s speed and Lewis’s slow leg-breaks keeping the batsmen well subdued. Lewis took two wickets and did not concede a run in his six overs while Phillipson conceded 14 from 14 overs, nine of which were maidens. Scores:— Christchurch 181 (Anderson 34. Candllsh 30. Brown 22, Cham bers 21 not out, Hern 16: Taylor 6/67), Waitaki 6/44 (Phillipson 2/14, Lewis 2/0). W’aitaki scored 206 in the second XI match. At stumps Christchurch had lost four wickets for 101 (Joseph 37 not out, Wall 24. Thomas 24). Christchurch won four of the six douL *s matches but only two of the six singles matches on the first day of the tennis. The score at the end of play was 6-6.
