“The Press” In 1866
March 10 ALE IN PARIS.—A correspondent in Paris, described a Frenchman at a cafe taking his ‘pale ale de Bass’— “First, he drank some of the beer, then he screwed his face up as if he did not like it, then added some water, made another face at the mixture, then put in four lumps of sugar and stirred it all up, and having finally added a ‘petit verre’ of cognac, imbibed the horrible mess with gusto—evidently, thinking himself, ‘plus Anglais que les Anglais.’ ”
WAIPORI MURDER.—John Jones, charged with having murdered Richard Atkinson, at Waipori, on the 23rd December last, was tried this week at Dunedin before his Honor Mr Justice Richmond. The jury found the prisoner guilty, but recommended him to mercy on account of the treatment the deceased had met with from his medical attendants. The judge in the usual form condemned the prisoner to death, but stated that he would forward the recommendation to the proper quarter.
