Scotch Song First Leg Fancy Tonight

“The Press” Special Service AUCKLAND. The Taranaki gelding Scotch Song looks a good prospect for the Raceway Handicap, the first leg of the T.A.B. double on the second night of the Waikato Trotting Club’s meeting at Claudelands tonight.

The race which has a limit of 2:16 for two miles, has drawn an even field. Scotch Song apart, there is sure to be solid backing for Henwood’s Pride, Poroti Pride, Scottish Eden and Shirley Brigade. Like the other five races for pacers, it will be started with the mobile barrier. Scotch Song finished a highly creditable fourth on the first night of the meeting on Saturday. He lost a lot of ground early and was a long way behind the leaders before he settled into his stride. He raced round the field to be in front starting the last round although he was easily run down by King Kong, he battled on gamely and lost third only in the last few strides. The last time Henwood’s Pride raced over two miles at Claudelands he finished second to Lonesome Valley. In three starts since, he has shaped soundly for a fourth and two fifths. He looked a little unlucky not to have finished closer than fifth on I Saturday. Poroti Pride did well to be I third in the Farewell Handi- ! cap on the first night. He became awkwardly placed on the rails, well back in the field, and did not work clear until late. Scottish Eden and Shirley Brigade have been racing consistently. Steigerman, a stablemate of Scotch Song, won so impressively on the first night that he is assured of a big following in the second leg, the Au Revoir Handicap. Both Scotch Song and Steigerman are trained and driven by D. R. Grantham. Steigerman’s main opposition may come from Dora Dee and Tamaki Glen. Dora Dee shaped promisingly at the Northland meeting recently and she will benefit from the mobile start more than most of her rivals. Tamaki Glen has had a first and three seconds in his last three races. He has been off

the scene since November, but he usually races well when fresh. None in the field has more speed. The weather is expected to be fine and the track will be fast.
