Maudella Completes Double Of £425

Maudella, a winner three starts earlier at Forhury Park, caused a minor surprise by winning the Fitzgerald Stakes, the second leg of the on-course double at Addington Raceway last night. The Nocatchem—Maudella combination paid £425 13s 6d for £l.

Fury River began best but t after two furlongs Maudella ; worked clear. Petite Sal re[ceived a splendid run in third I place. ‘ ( Maudella led to the straight ( fr- m Fury River and Petite Sal. with Anterior and Legendary the only others with' 1 much chance. Maudella was ■' not really put to the test and 1 won handily by a length. ] Petite Sal paced a useful!’ race for second, a length in ' I front of Anterior, which 1 fought o ngamely. Fury River I was a neck away fourth,' clear of Legendary, Bright High- ■ land, which was never a dan- > ger, Vauxhall Prince and Frosty Heather, which failed j to make any impression after being well back for most of the way in a fast-run race. By A Head Chief Command gained his fourth win for the season ■ when he got up in the last few strides to shade Snow ; Chief in the Moorhouse Stakes. Chief Command began best, but dropped in behind 1 Snow Chief after half a mile. He worked clear from an awkward pocket soon after straightening up and got up to win by a head. Snow Chief paced his best race in Canterbury to take second place, a length in front of Quality Inn, which showed gameness after being forced wide for five furlongs. The win favourite, Co Pilot, did well to finish a close fourth. He was badly placed in the middle of the field ; until near the two furlongs. He attempted to improve very 1 wide out and gave the leaders a long start from the home turn. On Probation was a ; sound fifth. Decisive Nocatchem, which paid moire than £lOO when she won 1

at Nelson in January, gained? a most impressive win in the; Cressy Stakes, the first leg! of the on-course double. Nocatchem tangled just before the stairt and was one of the tailenders for most of the way. She was not in the first eight racing to the straight, but when her Nelson ownertrainer, W. A. Cook, worked her clear she gathered in the leaders and was untroubled to win by a length. Morant made up ground for second, just ahead of Alray, which was never far away. West End, last for most of the way, showed speed to improve wide out on the home turn and he finished a sound fourth, ahead of Snead, which made up ground, Finesse, Angelita and the favourite, Udette, which had trouble securing a run in the straight. Strong Support Codex justified surprisingly confident support with a win in the George Seymour Handicap. It was his first win since being purchased some months ago by Mr and Mrs V. L. Davies and Mr P. Sepie, of Christchurch. D. G. Jones took Codex quietly in the early stages of the race, and improved with him to take the lead after slightly more than four furlongs. He surrendered the lead to Stella Globe, which had drifted badly early, before the half-mile and pulled out to challenge her with a furlong left. He did best to win by a short length from Stella Globe, with a length to Madam Scott and a length and a half to Flying Minstrel, which made up ground. Polydorus was a close fifth, clear of Mystique, which broke early.
