Eggs For Australia Dried In Blenheim
(New Zealand Press Association) BLENHEIM, The New South Wales Egg Marketing Board has 2800 dozen eggs in Blenheim’s freeze dry plant operated by Instant Foods (N.Z.), Ltd. Observing them is the board's chemist, Mr A. I. Roper.
Mr Roper said that Blenheim was the only part of the South Pacific area where freeze-dry trials on the scale demanded by his board could be done. The board has done laboratory scale tests with the process, but before launching out into large scale production and purchasing the equipment required it decided to have a full commercial run. Three batches of eggs, amounting to 36001 b of egg pulp, or 2800 dozen New Zealand eggs, will be processed here. The eggs were pulped in the Combined Co-operative Distributors’ Plants in Christchurch and brought to Blenheim to be frozen. The first batch has been freeze-dried and sent on to Australia for trials by selected biscuit and cake manufacturers. Mr Roper said he was not in the position to indicate
bow the first batch turned out, but he saw an excellent future for freeze-dried eggs. The processed eggs are a fragile, very fine honeycombed structure which will break up easily. It is put in containers sealed to keep out oxygen and air and flown to Australia. Mr Roper explained that lib of freeze-dried eggs was equivalent in weight to 41b of liquid eggs which in turn was equivalent to 40 fresh eggs.
