Two Attacking N.Z. Record

If conditions are reasonable, V. L. Newlove’s New Zealand record for the flying half-mile could be broken at tonight’s track cycling meeting at English Park.

Newlove set the mark of 55.65ec early this year at the Kew Bowl, Southland, and two cyclists, J. H. Cleary (Papanui) and C. B. Fitzgerald (Christchurch), will attempt to lower this time. Both riders are among the six Canterbury men who have been selected for the final

Commonwealth Games trials at Auckland in April. Cleary is the national time trial champion, a title he won at the New Zealand championships last week. There is every prospect of a fast time, possibly a New Zealand record, in the five miles as well. The six riders going to Auckland —the others are T. R. Weir, S. J. Stephen, M. W. Litolff, and W. G. Kendall—will be anxious for good times to bolster their claims. Included in the field are the four members of the champion Canterbury senior pursuit team, Cleary, R. D. Mann, T. J. Tabak, and P. A. Skilling.
