RACING Tarim Picked For Cup At Hastings

“The Press” Special Service WELLINGTON. ~ Tarim ran so well in the Rangitikei Cup at his last start that he is likely to be at short odds for the Leopard Gold Cup, first leg of the T.A.B. double at the Napier Park Racing Club’s meeting at Hastings tomorrow.

Tarim has had very limited experience in open company, but everything about him points to his making good quickly.

I Baloo is the top-weight with i9:O. He is not a good weightcarrier, but managed quite iwell under a hard ride in the I Napier Gold Cup on Saturday. The local favourite is the Lowry-owned Shut. He finished strongly in the sprint on Saturday and his connexions have high hopes for him. If the ground is firmer than on Saturday, High Disdain should run prominently on his home track, but as good a prospect is Fon. He was forced into the pacemaking in the Napier Gold Cup and went down only in the last few yards to Baloo. The two were clear of the others. Dalvui is in two races, but if the first is selected, Dalvui should be close to the lead at the end. He is fast • early and this will help in the ‘big field. ■ Hakawai went badly when expected to win the Rangi(tikei Cup. Her run was nothing like her showing in the

Wellington George Adams Mile or in the Marton Cup. One which took the eye as a likely improver in the Rangitikei Cup was El Ganador, which ran well in the Napier Gold Cup. Royal Pursuit, a close second to Combination on Saturday, is the probable winner of the second leg of the T.A.B. double, the Stewart Handicap. But for running about he would have been first on the opening day. Also fancied will be Jan Eyre which, over seven furlongs on a roomy track, should be in her element. Although Combination only just managed his win, he is on the upgrade and probably will have improved enough to contest the finish again. Prince Mahmoud will have G. L. Willets riding him this week. Willetts was riding when he won at Wairoa last week. Llandudno was confidently supported in the hurdles on Saturday but was brought down by another horse. He has a chance again in the Ahuriri Hack Hurdles, first leg of the on-course double. Ponsadin should win theJuvenile race, the Marewa

Handicap. It is a pity that Success Story has drawn so wide in this race, because the Ropiha-trained filly looks good. If there are a few scratchings and Success Story draws closer she will surely be in the money. Playboy stands out in the hack sprint, the Puketapu Hack Handicap and Grisbi, the sufferer from interference on Saturday, should end tomorrow’s racing with a win in the Taradale Hack Handicap. Selections:— Noon.—Ahuriri Hack Hurdles: Llandudno, Blue Stand, Aorangi. 12.40 p.m.—Trial Plate: Mr Fashion, Balyn, Abdication. 1.20 p.m.—Meeanee Hack Handicap: Bold Invader, Gave All, Ta Vince. 2 p.m.—Marewa Handicap: Ponsadin, Jean Marie, Success Story. 2.45 p.m.—Leopard Gold Cup: Tarim, Shut, El Ganador. 3.25 p.m.—Puketapu Hack Handicap: Playboy, Leanel, Elucidation. 4.15 p.m.—Stewart Handicap: Royal Pursuit, Jan Eyre, Combination. 4.55 p.m.—Taradale Hack Handicap: Grisbi, Happy Billy, Jubilee Boy. Fields, with form, for the double are:— 2.45 p.m.—
