Steel

Sir, —The news that over supply of steel has necessitated reduced production in Broken Hill, just as we are spending enormous sums to start a similar (but much more costly because of a smaller output) steel mill is extremely disconcerting. Add to that the warning by the director-general of G.A.T.T. that our import controls designed to protect our smelters are clear breaches and will ultimately have to be abolished under threat of expulsion, and we have a pretty picture of economic insanity. We also have Japan's clear warning that our import control policy is the greatest obstacle to trade with each other. The same will apply to the E.E.C. Apparently Australia will be prepared to reduce her moderate tariffs in order to enlarge her most valuable trade with Japan, while we just blunder on until the day of reckoning. Both parties are committed to this madness. Cannot men of vision be found before the elections?—Yours, etc., V. WILKINSON. Ashburton, March 7, 1966.
