Here To Study Burial Customs
(Neto Zealand Press Association)
AUCKLAND, March C. An invitation to a Maori tangi is one of the greatest wishes of a retired American doctor, who has dedicated the rest of his life to the study of death. Dr. L. W. Hosford, at present visiting New Zealand, is making a study of the funeral and burial customs of countries throughout the world. Although he has already spent some time collecting films and informaitiion from New Zealand, he has so far not been able to get permis-
sion to photograph a Maori funeral. Dr. Hosford is preparing a coloured movie picture library on burial customs which will eventually be made available to the mortuary profession and research scientists. Dr. Hosford, who founded the San Francisco College of Mortuary Science in 1929, plans to have about 1700 feet of film on each country. So far he has completed work in Japan and Hong Kong and has done preliminary study in the Philippines.
