UNIVERSITY SERVICES
Big Attendances Academic success did not guide one into the right way of living and the acquisition of a fundamental guide to life came through faith and the recognition of Christ as the source of wisdom, the Rev. L. Jones, minister of St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church, told 400 University students attending the Canterbury University orientation service at Christ’s College on Sunday afternoon. Attended by many university staff members as well as students, the orientation service was conducted by the university chaplain, the Rev. D. R. Wilson, and the blessing was pronounced by the Bishop of Christchurch (the Rt. Rev. A. K. Warren). The Lessons were read by the Vice-chancellor of the university, Dr. L. L. Pownall, and the president-elect of the Students’ Association, Mr L. Jones. The choir of the Oxford Terrace Baptist Church took part in the service. In the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament an academic Mass was celebrated by the Roman Catholic Bishop of Christchurch, the Most Rev. B. P. Ashby; the rector of Holy Name Seminary, the Very Rev. G. McGinty; the rector of St. Bede’s College, the Very Rev. L. J. Evatt, the administrator of the Cathedral Very Rev. J. Cuneen; and an honours student at the university, the Rev. J. G. Roberts.
