More Than 2000 Attend “Cub Day" At Kaiapoi

More than 1700 Wolf Cubs, 300 scouters and 80 lay workers met on Saturday at the Blue Skies Training and Camping Ground, Kaiapoi, to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of cubbing in the world. Cub day was intended as the highlight of the jubilee year and was observed at the same time in the four main New Zealand centres. The boys, representing 97 packs, came from as far afield as Hokitika, Waimate and Timaru. Special guests during the afternoon were the Mayor of Kaiapoi (Mr H. O. Hills), the Kaiapoi Town Clerk (Mr N. Clemens) and Mrs Clemens and the Area Commissioner for Canterbury (Mr S. Stark). Six months had gone into the planning for the day, under the direction of the Assistant Area Commissioner for Cubs (Miss C. Hayward). To mark the jubilee, a special flag, made by Mrs E. Curren was flying at the flagpole for the one day and will now be preserved in the archives at Blue Skies.

In perfect conditions, the 11 acres in the grounds were full of activity, the boys competing in an anti-litter song competition or a treasure hunt, or taking part in pack projects based on cub efficiency from tenderpad to second star work. Competition results were:— Anti-litter song: St. Christopher’s pack, Christchurch. Treasure Hunt: Wainoni, Christchurch 1, Beckenham, Christchurch 2. Other activities included displays by the Kaiapoi Model Aero Club, five police dogs and Army motor-cycles.

Wairakei School.—Officers elected at the annual meeting of the Wairakei Home and School Association were: president, Mrs N. Stewart; vice-president, Mr D. Crabb; secretary, Mrs B. J. McAtamney; treasurer, Mrs B. King; committee, Mesdames J. French, H. Whatman and P. Dunbar, Messrs G. Boyd, P. Ambler and R. Steele.
