Saltan Has 1st Aust. Win

(N.Z. Press Assn. —Copyright) SYDNEY. The New Zealander, Saltan —once described by some experts as “not worth five bob” —firmly established himself as a Sydney Cup hope when he won at his first start in Australia on Saturday. Saltan landed a huge plunge to start at 5/2 favourite and win the Carramar Welter Handicap over one mile at Warwick Farm in fine style. Stretching out strongly in the straight, he won by two lengths from Patient Polly (33/1) with the New Zealandbred Able Sal (16/1) a short head away third. Saltan is part-owned by Mr J. J. Moodabe of Auckland. When Mr Moodabe paid LNZ2OOO for Saltan, some racing friends told him he was mad.
