CLUB CRICKET McIntyre Has 9 Wickets
1 here was a lethargic air about senior cricket games on Saturday when teams began the final round with the competition already decided.
Scoring was low in most matches and Sydenham, the champion team, was all out for 87 against Old Bovs.
Riccarton and Lancaster Park also failed to reach 100 in their first innings. The Canterbury spin bowler, J M. Mclntyre, had the good figures of five for 37 and four 3”' 13. B. C. Irving and K. I. Ferries were other bowlers to take "five wickets. St. Albans was the only team to score a reasonable amount of runs. J. W. Burtt contributing 83 and J. A. Mills Good Start Sent in to bat at Ham, WestUmversity started well, and J. R. Veitch and I. M. Walter scored 72 for the first wicket. Of these Veitch made 54 and he handled the rather difficult conditions well. The slow bowlers, D. J. McKendry and Irving, did well for Lancaster Park, and then P A. Sharp, of West-University, also was able to make the ball turn sharply and lift disconcertingly. Wickets fell regularly in Lancaster Park’s innings. R. T. Dowker batted comfortably with R. E. Gearry, and added 41 for the fifth wicket. but the side collapsed after Dowker’s dismissal. Batsmen Humbled Aggressive batting bv K. J. Samson, Mills. Burtt and J. M.
Ruston enabled St. Albans to declare at 2*3 for seven, having batted at better than a run a minute. Samson and Mills put on 119 for the first wicket and Burtt and Ruston 71 for the fifth. Riccarton was humbled by the bowling of Ferries and M. B. Poore, and only two players reached double fiures in ' the side’s innings of 64. In a gloomy light, when Riccarton batted again, the openers remained undefeated at the close. Bowler’s Pitch Recent rain provided a bowler’s pitch at Hagley for the Old Boys-Sydenham match, and 24 wickets fell during the day. nine of them to the spin of Mclntyre for 50 runs. Old Boys were sent in by Sydenham, and were soon in trouble against D. L. Gallop and Mclntyre. Stubborn defence by B. G. Hadlee paved the way for a moderate total of 125. How-! ever, Sydenham was even more uncomfortable and was dismissed for 71. Four more Old Boys wickets fell cheaply before stumps, and the game is still poised evenly. ] Pugnacious 61 Neither side gave very convincing batting displays at Burwood Park, and only R. C. Bromley, who made a pugnacious 64 in Old Collegians first innings, passed 40. He received solid support from R. T. Hunt. Until I. D. Shewan scored readily in a flurry of hitting near the end, there was only convincing opposition from one East-Shirley batsman, B. A. Haworth, who showed a sound technique against the Old Collegians spinners. J. H. M. Dawson came back for a final 10 balls and took three wickets.
